The first-ever foreign-born yokozuna (grand champion) of Japan’s national sport of sumo announced his retirement in late January 2001. Taro Akebono (formerly Chad Rowan of Hawaii) belongs to the Azumazeki beya, or “stable,” of sumo wrestlers.
