The day was Sept. 29 of 2009. A tsunami, triggered by an 8.0 earthquake, hit Atoa’s home country of Samoa. Wire reports claimed that 186 people died in the disaster. Among those people were Atoa’s cousin, along with several friends. In the Samoa Bowl VII girls’ volleyball competition Hawaii will defend their title against American Samoa, the competition opening with friendly scrimmages today at the American Samoa Community College gym. The title match is set for 9:30 a.m., New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31.
