The day was Sept. 29 of 2009. A tsunami, triggered by an 8.0 earthquake, hit Atoa’s home country of Samoa. Wire reports claimed that 186 people died in the disaster. Among those people were Atoa’s cousin, along with several friends. Eric “The Body” Fonoimoana struck Olympic Gold at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and has been a dominant and consistent force on the AVP Tour since winning his first event in 1994. In the Samoa Bowl VII girls’ volleyball competition Hawaii will defend their title against American Samoa, the competition opening with friendly scrimmages today at the American Samoa Community College gym.
