It is no secret that American college love Samoan football players for their size and strength. The islands have been a recent hotbed of recruiting activity as teams look to add quality players  to their rosters before fall camp starts. The University of Hawaii has often been a leading recruiter of Samoan talent simply because of its relative proximity to Samoa. That remained true this past week when assistant coach Tony Tuioti visited Samoa on the first of two recruiting trips he has lined up this offseason. Tuioti is in his first year as the defensive line coach at his alma mater, but he...

Aaron Kia became the latest Samoan-American football prospect to make it to the NFL. The former University of Hawaii offensive tackle recently signed a contract with the New York Jets. Impressively, he signed his contract with the Jets despite going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft held last month in New York. Kia was a standout at the University of Hawaii for four years after graduating from Mililani High School on Oahu in 2005. He was named to the Western Athletic Conference’s all-Academic team in three of his four playing years. Over his final two seasons he started 24 consecutive games...

ESPN-Outside the Line presents: An inspirational story for the ages! BOULDER, Colo. — Every Sunday, after church, the 7-year-old boy would escape to Grandpa’s basement. He’d never seen such a room — trophies and game balls and jerseys and photos and videotapes, all at his disposal. He’d heard about a place called heaven, a magical place they raved about in Bible school, and he decided this had to be it. It had to be. Because his father was here. One of those trophies … his daddy won. One of those game balls … his daddy earned. One of those jerseys … his...

OREM — He’s not coming from nowhere. This time last year, Manase Tonga was out of shape, unsure if he’d play his senior year of college at BYU, and very confused as to whether he’d ever reach his dream of playing in the NFL. But today, he’s finished a giant leap to get back on track — and his dream lives on. At 6-foot and 248 pounds, Tonga is a devastating blocker with powerful drive in his lower body. As a lead blocker in Robert Anae’s offense, he was fearless in tracking down and putting a bead on linemen, linebackers, safeties and corners for Harvey Unga....

Young football phenom from Hawaii, Manti Te’o, a true freshman at Notre Dame, has decided to continue playing for the Fighting Irish in the 2010 football season and forego his Mormon mission this year. Despite the coaching change and lack luster season, Te’o feels that his team is ready to make a solid comeback in 2010. His decision to comeback, according to the Irish sports information department, was a largely spiritual one. Although he is a highly touted linebacker and one of the top high school recruits in years, Te’o says that his ability to meet people and engage them...
